| What is DFN? |
| The Dalit Freedom Network’s mission is to empower the Dalits in their quest for religious freedom, social justice, and human dignity by networking human, financial, and informational resources. |
| How much does it cost to sponsor a child and what does this cover? |
| Sponsorship costs $28 US per month per child. Your donations may be made monthly, quarterly, bi-annually or annually. Your faithful sponsorship covers tuition, uniforms, school supplies, midday meals (where necessary) textbooks, teacher salaries, and administrative costs for your child's education. |
| What is the caste system? |
| A summary of the caste system is provided for you on the Dalit Freedom Network's homepage. Who are Dalits? |
| Why focus on the Dalits of India? |
| We focus on India’s Dalits primarily because they specifically invited us into their struggle for freedom from oppression. Their movement is gaining momentum, and we have the opportunity to play a vital role in their emancipation. For more details, please visit our website at www.dalitnetwork.org |
| Where can I find financial accountability information about DFN? |
| DFN is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit and is accredited by the ECFA (Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability). In 2007, 90.4% of total DFN funds went directly to our programs. For our complete statement of financial integrity, please visit our website Financial Accountability page. |
| Why sponsor a child? |
| Education, which is sustained by child sponsorship, is the key to total community transformation. Your sponsorship offers children the hope that comes with excellent English education from Indian national teachers at our Dalit Education Centers. As parents grow to trust the DECs through their child’s schooling, they may join economic self-help groups and be equipped to better provide for their family, or they may learn important health and hygiene practices through our healthcare programs. Your sponsorship will help open the door to a new world for the Dalits: a world of opportunity, dignity, and best of all, hope. |
| Are there other ways that I can help? |
| Our Education Program does not stand alone, but is intertwined with the three other main components of DFN’s Community Transformation Process: Healthcare, Economic Development, and Social Justice. Each of these components requires vast financial, informational and human resources. There are many ways to get involved in each of these components. Please read our website Opportunities page for specific ideas of how you can join the Dalits in their quest for freedom. |
| Why English-medium education? |
| English is the language of the modern Indian economy. Because high caste children typically learn English at expensive private schools, they are qualified for further academic studies and jobs in the new Indian economy. Dalit Education Centers allow Dalits to have the same opportunities as their high caste peers. |
| Who are the teachers at the Dalit Education Centers? |
| Our teachers are qualified Indian nationals who are passionate about teaching the poorest people on the planet. The teacher training course is an intensive ten-month training program that prepares skilled professionals in the field of Indian education. Graduates are academically strong and are prepared to invest their time and energy to empower the Dalit children and their society. |
| Is my child already attending school and what happens to my child should I no longer be able to give? |
| Yes, your child is attending school. Your child sponsorship support goes into a pool for the entire school student body. However, you are the only person who has the opportunity to build a sponsor/child relationship with your child. By using this approach, if you are not able to continue sponsoring your child, your child will be able to remain in school, and then be re-eligible for sponsorship. This also allows unsponsored children to attend school. Our goal and hope is to have every child in each school sponsored. |
